A recycling centre in Surrey has permanently closed because of ongoing fly-tipping problems, a council has said.
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council announced it will close the recycling site at Stubbs Lane, Kingswood, despite efforts to combat illegal waste dumping.
The Council said the site has continued to attract large volumes of non-recyclable waste despite issuing fixed penalty notices against offenders.
Signs were also posted last year warning that continued misuse of the site would result in its closure.
Unfortunately, fly-tipping at our recycling sites, which can contaminate this recycling, undermines the efforts of the responsible majority.
The Council says it will continue to monitor the site after its closure to deter any further fly-tipping incidents.
Commenting on the closure, Cllr Hannah Avery, Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We’re grateful to the many residents who do the right thing when recycling their waste.
“Unfortunately, fly-tipping at our recycling sites, which can contaminate this recycling, undermines the efforts of the responsible majority.”
Fly-tipping incidents increased by 6% in England in 2024, rising to 1.15 million from the 1.08 million reported between 2022 and 2023.
Local authorities can issue fixed penalty notices of up to £1000 for fly-tipping incidents.
